An appeal has been made for witnesses to come forward after a group of Dunedin students were attacked by several youths, hospitalising three women.

The group of female students was walking along Cumberland St, Dunedin, about 10:35pm on July 31 when the attack happened. It left one student with serious injuries and another two with minor injuries, police said.

"We would like to speak to anyone who witnessed this incident," a police statement said.

There were several people walking and driving past the incident when it happened, police said.

"Police are particularly interested in speaking to a group of men, who were driving a Black Ford Ranger ute and pulled over to help the victims, as we believe they have information that could assist the investigation.

"Anyone with information that could assist police is asked to contact us on 105 and quote file number 210801/8794."
