Two thieves at KFC Queenstown have taken off with a customers' drive-thru order on the first day out of lockdown.

The incident occurred at about 8:30pm on Wednesday, when a person was waiting in the drive-thru in their car for their KFC order to be prepared, a police spokeswoman said.

But when their order of beloved colonel was placed on the drive-thru window, two men carrying skateboards stole it.

While the chicken thieves have yet to be located, police said officers are reviewing CCTV footage to try and identify them.

Wednesday was New Zealand's first day back at COVID-19 alert level 3 (excluding Auckland and Northland), meaning takeaway outlets could reopen for pick up and delivery orders.
