Watch: Armed police use tear gas, chainsaw, dogs in dramatic siege to capture Christchurch teen slaying suspect

Dramatic footage shows armed police laying siege to a suburban house in Christchurch as their investigation into a teen's slaying continues.

Sixteen-year-old Connor Whitehead was gunned down at a teenage birthday party on Friday night. Four people have been arrested while police continue seeking a fifth person.

Now, footage can be shown of a raid where police captured a man linked to the case after a long and dramatic standoff.

Police swooped on a Burnside street on Sunday night searching for a suspect. They tried to entice him out calmly.

"Show us where you are, we'll help you, get you out of there, get you warm," police told the man.

When that failed they used tear gas and other tactics before eventually cutting into the house with a chainsaw and sending dogs in. The man, who has name suppression, was eventually apprehended.

Crowds gathered on the street to watch the dramatic events unfold.

"We obviously don't like this in our area but hopefully everything is sorted now," one person said.

"It's just quite shocking to have something like this happen here," another said.

Police have now arrested four people in connection with the death but a fifth remains on the run. Three of them appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday, all charged with being an accessory after the fact to murder. They have received interim name suppression and will reappear in the High Court in a couple of weeks.

Connor's family released a statement on Monday saying: "We are in shock and want answers about what happened to our beloved son, brother, and friend.

"Connor was dearly loved, and his passing has left a huge hole in our lives.

"He was a kind, talented and deeply loyal young man who had such a bright future ahead of him.

"Connor was in no way connected to, or affiliated with, the people who are responsible for his death."

Police continue working hard on bringing those responsible to justice.
