Police have charged a teenager with murder after a fatal attack on an 18-year-old in a supermarket carpark in Christchurch on Saturday.

The 16-year-old boy will appear in Christchurch District Court on Monday.

"This is a tragic outcome and once again this year we're investigating the murder of a young person in our community," Detective Inspector Joel Syme said in a press release on Sunday.

"The victim's family are tonight [Sunday] coming to terms with their loss and are understandably distraught. We are helping them through this challenging time."

Police were called to the Countdown carpark on Moorhouse Avenue on Saturday morning at about 2am.

There they found the seriously injured teen, who was transported to hospital but died later on Sunday.

"There were a group of people present when the assault occurred and we'd like to thank those who have come forward to discuss what they witnessed," Syme says.

Police are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
