A helicopter is due to get in the air this morning to help tackle a major vegetation fire in the Far North.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said there is about 1km in length that is actively burning.

They say crews are being briefed to return to the scene, after it was contained and monitored overnight.

The 300 hectare blaze has been confined to an area of swampland in Kaimaumau.

It was reported shortly before 1.30pm yesterday.

Nine fire engines, seven helicopters, two excavators and a bulldozer were working to put it out yesterday.

Fire and Emergency set up a command unit from Whangārei to manage the incident.

The blaze has not threatened any properties but members of the public have been asked to avoid the area.
