Weather: New Year's Eve forecast revealed

The latest forecast for New Year's Eve has been revealed - and it's mostly good news for those heading out.

WeatherWatch says warm weather is expected for the big night - with some places getting temperatures over 20C at midnight.

"High pressure is likely to dominate New Zealand for the last day and night of 2021, good news for those heading out for New Year's Eve," it says in a release on Tuesday.

"The humidex (or 'feels like') temperature will be in the late teens and early 20s for much of the country in the hours just before midnight and around midnight itself."

The upper North Island will be warmest with temperatures in Auckland, Mt Maunganui and Whangamata likely around 20C to 23C at midnight, according to WeatherWatch.

Some areas may be a little cooler - mainly those locations at higher elevations, such as Queenstown and Taupo, which may be more in the mid to lower teens by late evening.

Meanwhile, East Cape and Gisborne might see a shower during the day in the leadup to New Year's Eve, but by evening conditions are looking dry.

"Any shower in the North Island will likely be highly isolated and short-lived," WeatherWatch says.

"Rain is expected in Fiordland and, in fact, is forecast to get steadier and heavier as the day goes on with the bulk of the rainfall occurring at night and around midnight. South Westland may also be brushed by this rain or drizzle."

The rain in Fiordland means cloudy weather is expected over into parts of Otago and Southland.

"The positive side to that is it will help keep temperatures milder at night," WeatherWatch adds.
