Man lucky to be alive after drink driver crashes van into fuel pump he was using

A man is lucky to be alive after a van being driven by a man over the alcohol limit crashed into the fuel pump he was using on Tuesday night.

Footage of the aftermath shared on Facebook shows the front bumper of the van crunched between a pole and the fuel pump, which was on its side against the man's car.

"I was filling up my car, came in plunged into the whole f***ing thing coming about 50kms an hour honest to god, that thing nearly went through my door."

The 41-year-old man who crashed his van into the petrol pump can be seen taking a sip out of a beer bottle before tipping it out onto the petrol station's forecourt.

"Look and he's drinking man, on the piss still."

The crash took place at a Gull petrol station in the Whangārei suburb of Raumanga at 8 pm on Tuesday.

As the man continues to record the messy aftermath of the crash airbags can be seen inflated inside the van.

A police spokesperson told Newshub the 41-year-old is due to appear in Whangārei District Court next month facing a number of charges.

"[Facing] charges relating to driving in a dangerous manner and driving with excess breath alcohol."

The spokesperson said it's not the man's first or second offence in relation to drinking while driving.

"There [are] stricter penalties if someone has a third or subsequent conviction for excess breath or blood alcohol."
