A 3-magnitude earthquake has struck 5km east of Christchurch overnight.
The quake was 5km deep and caused "light" shaking, according to GeoNet, scaling the magnitude up after initially labelling it 2.7.
"That was wobbly," one Twitter user said of the quake.
"Was awake and felt this short rattle," another wrote.
"I wouldn't call it 'weak' from where I was," said another, adding they were "shaken awake".
Nearly 700 people reported feeling the quake to GeoNet. Of those reports, 48 were labelled "moderate".
