Reckless driver flips ute after failed palm tree manoeuvre then shoves cop in St Heliers, Auckland

A reckless driver crashed and flipped his ute before pushing a police officer in the Auckland suburb of St Heliers on Monday.

A witness to the crash told Newshub the driver of the large silver ute appeared to be drunk and was taken away by police after he began pushing an officer.

The witness said the male driver drove around the corner of a nearly empty Hanene Street in St Heliers, where he mounted the footpath.

Emergency services and police were called to the incident and began trying to flip the car back over.

After about 10-15 minutes, the driver started a pushing match with an officer. A firefighter at the scene quickly stepped in and helped restrain the driver, who was placed in handcuffs and taken away by police, the witness said.

Police told Newshub they were alerted to a single-vehicle crash just after 2pm on Monday.

The man did not receive any serious injuries and officers are making further inquiries with the driver, police said.
