Have your say: Do you think New Zealand should become a republic?

  • 06/06/2022

It's been a weekend of pomp as the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth, and the world celebrated the Queen's 70 years on the throne.

At the age of 96, Elizabeth II is the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee and for many is the only sovereign they've ever known. She's also New Zealand's Head of State.

While Kiwis' admiration of and interest in the royals may hit highs over weekends like these, some still continue to push for New Zealand to become a republic.

That would mean having a New Zealander as Head of State. Aotearoa could remain part of the Commonwealth even as a republic, as other countries have.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern last year said she believes New Zealand will become a republic "in my lifetime", but that it's not something currently "New Zealanders feel particularly strongly about".

The Māori Party has openly called for a "divorce" from the British monarchy in favour of "constitutional transformation that restores the tino rangatiratanga of tangata whenua in this country".
