Man charged with murder after stabbing of Christchurch woman granted name suppression

The daughter of a Christchurch woman allegedly murdered on a suburban street on Saturday afternoon has paid an emotional tribute to her mother.

Emergency services were called to Cheyenne St in Sockburn at 4:20pm on Saturday after reports a woman, who can now be named Laisa Maraia Waka, had been stabbed in the street. Waka was found with critical injuries and, despite medical assistance, she died at the scene.

A 37-year-old man appeared in court on Monday morning charged with her murder.

Waka was on her way home from work and unknown to her alleged killer.

Her Fiji-based daughter has since shared that she last talked to her mum on Mother's Day and the pair hadn't seen each other for four years.

"We will miss you so much," she said on Facebook.

She said there wouldn't be "a day that goes by when I won't think of you".

"You've always been my role model... you always encourage me to be more hardworking, be independent, be respectful... I'm so grateful to be your daughter.

"I can't begin to express how much I miss you... There is a huge hole in my heart and I don't know how I'm going to cope."

The accused, who has name suppression, appeared briefly via audio-visual link in the Christchurch District Court - with three staff in the room with him.

He was remanded in custody to reappear at the High Court in Christchurch on July 15.

The Judge called for a report into the accused's mental health and whether he was fit to stand trial.

Canterbury District Commander Supt John Price on Sunday said Waka's death was the result of a "senseless, violent act".
