A Northland family is devastated after their 10-year-old son died in a "freak accident" after falling from a tree at his home.
The incident happened at a property on State Highway 14, Wheki Valley, west of Whangārei when 10-year-old Declan Halford climbed a tree before the "freak accident" occurred.
Police confirmed the death on Saturday afternoon and said it wasn't being treated as suspicious.
A Givealittle page has been set up by a family friend, whose children are close with Halford, to help with financial support for the grieving family.
The money will go towards helping pay for the funeral and day-to-day family expenses.
The family friend added the money will help to "take some financial strain off the family so they can just concentrate on getting each other through this next season and spending time together".
People have paid tribute to Halford and his grieving family with one person commenting on the Givealittel page, "My heart breaks for this family" while another added, "Our sincere condolences at this unimaginably sad time".
The page has so far raised over $11,500 since it was created on Monday.
