Flights out of Auckland Airport were delayed on Wednesday after a person shot at police while fleeing from an aggravated robbery.

Police were called to an aggravated robbery at a commercial address on Maich Road in Manurewa just after 10:30am on Wednesday.

Counties Manukau CIB detective inspector Karen Bright said when officers arrived, they found a car believed to be involved in the robbery.

"The vehicle has been followed by police when an occupant has discharged a firearm from the vehicle towards police," Bright said. "Fortunately, no police staff have been injured as a result."

Bright said the eagle helicopter was deployed to monitor the car.

"The vehicle was successfully spiked in Wiri, but it has continued on," Bright said.

"The Armed Offenders Squad was deployed and followed the vehicle when it was brought to a stop on Landscape Road in Papatoetoe."

Bright said two people were arrested and police recovered a gun from the vehicle.

An Auckland Airport spokesperson said arriving flights were briefly delayed because of the police helicopter.
