Weather forecast looking promising for upcoming school holidays

The North Island is in for a wet weekend, with a heavy rain warning issued as a low-pressure system brings rain to much of the area.

MetService meteorologist Luis Fernades said the persistent rain is something many meteorologists have been talking about this week.

"A heavy rain watch is already in place for Auckland, Northland and Coromandel for Saturday and our severe weather meteorologists expect Auckland and Coromandel to be upgraded to a warning closer to the time."

The South Island is in for a much colder and drier weekend with a ridge of high-pressure positioning itself over the South Island.

"The clear skies in the south will allow temperatures to drop below freezing for much of the South Island into Saturday morning so any keen gardeners might consider covering some of their more sensitive plants this weekend," Fernades said.

A slow-moving low pressure passing over the north means the wet weather will likely stay in place, eventually getting to the upper South Island and Canterbury.

The MetService meteorologist said low pressure will likely move away by Tuesday, just in time for the school holidays, which allow things to dry up in the North Island.

"The turbulent spring weather isn't done with us yet as the latest forecasts are indicating a significant cold spell is headed for Aotearoa mid-to-late next week, so keep those blankets on hand," Fernandes said
