Man reportedly flees police on skateboard, hides in church after threatening Dunedin Work and Income staff

A man has been arrested after he allegedly threatened Dunedin Work and Income (WINZ) staff before reportedly fleeing police on a skateboard and hiding in a church.

Police confirmed to Newshub officers were called to a Princes St premises on Friday afternoon after a reports a man was making threatening comments and had been asked to leave. 

Charges were then laid after the man fled in the direction of lower Stuart St on a skateboard, the Otago Daily Times reported.

A witness told the ODT they saw the man "flying down through the lights" at the intersection of lower Stuart St and Moray Pl. The witness later saw police officers hauling the man out of the First Church on Moray Pl. 

A police spokesperson said a 44-year-old man was located by officers on Moray Pl shortly after and the alleged threats were made at WINZ. He's facing five charges including threatening to kill or cause grievous bodily harm and resisting police. 

The man was also charged with unlawful intimidation or threats, disorderly behaviour and indecent act with intent to insult.
