Tairāwhiti police have arrested nine teenagers after multiple vehicles were broken into on Sunday and Monday.

Police say they received multiple reports of a number of vehicles being broken into in Mangapapa on Sunday night and on Fox St on Monday morning.

A police spokesperson said staff and dog teams responded and successfully arrested the teens.

"Five of the youths have been charged with the unlawful taking of three vehicles and breaking-in to a further three."

Police said the remaining four teenagers have been referred to Youth Aid to "ensure they are held accountable and supported to prevent them from re-offending".

Tairāwhiti Area Prevention Manager Inspector Darren Paki said in a statement a quick response from police resulted in the nine teens being arrested.

"Police were alerted to the vehicle break-ins straight away, which meant staff were able to track the offenders."

Insp Paki urged Kiwis to keep in contact with their neighbours and to let each other know if they see anything unusual.

"I would also like to use this opportunity to remind the public to ensure your vehicles are secure."

Insp Paki added parking vehicles off the road, locking them and using steering locks and engine immobilisers could prevent a break-in.

"In addition, please ensure valuables and credit cards are removed from vehicles at night, particularly if cars are parked in the open."

Insp Paki said police staff will continue to actively patrol the Tairāwhiti area.

Insp Paki added anyone who sees suspicious activity around vehicles can call Police on 111 if it's happening or 105 after the fact, or call anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
