A third person has been arrested for the murder of a man in Tauranga last year.

Mitchell Te Kani, 51, died at his Maungatapu Rd home on May 14, 2022.

Police were initially called to a "disorder incident" involving a group of people at the home, however, the police found Te Kani dead.

Last year, a family spokesperson told Stuff the Mongrel Mob entered the house in a "violent invasion". They said Te Kani died a hero while protecting his family from the home invasion.

The NZ Herald reported at the time, Te Kani's uncle said there were around 30 to 40 young gang members at the home.

A 25-year-old man has been charged with Te Kani's murder. He will also be facing charges for assault against other people who were at the address on the night of the alleged murder.

The man appeared in the Tauranga District Court on Tuesday and is due to reappear in the High Court at Tauranga on February 1.

Two others, a 41-year-old man and 40-year-old woman, have previously been charged with Te Kani's murder and a number of charges of assault against others at the property.

The 41-year-old man was arrested in October and the woman in December.

They are due to appear in the High Court at Tauranga on March 15.

The homicide investigation is ongoing and the police urge anyone with information to contact them on 105 and quote file number 220515/3688.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.
