Jury spends hours deliberating in David Benbow murder trial, no verdict yet

The jury has begun deliberations into whether David Benbow murdered Christchurch man Michael McGrath.

The jury spent four hours deliberating on Wednesday, however, no verdict was reached.

The trial has been taking place at the High Court in Christchurch since February where multiple people took the stand and told jurors of the relationship between Benbow and McGrath.

Justice Jonathan Eaton summed up the case on Wednesday morning, reminding jurors to put any sympathy for either side apart.

"Sympathy for Mr McGrath and his family, a family who haven't seen their son for six years and believe that he is dead but don't know where he is. Sympathy for Jo Green, sympathy for the Benbow children, sympathy for Mr Benbow and the predicament that he faces," Justice Eaton said.

The jury will resume deliberations at 10am on Thursday.
