The sun is shining in Auckland on Saturday but cooling off in the ocean might not be the best thing to do, as many popular Auckland beaches are unsafe to swim in.

On Auckland Council's Safeswim website, some of Auckland's most popular beaches have been issued a black water droplet, meaning "do not swim".

The black water droplet signifies the beaches have been affected by wastewater overflow.

The black-marked beaches are:

  • Beach Haven
  • Herne Bay
  • Home Bay
  • St Mary's Bay
  • Te Tiana
  • Mission Bay Beach
  • Kohimaramara Beach
  • St Heliers
  • Point England
  • Māngere Bridge

Several other beaches have been marked with a red water droplet where swimming at those locations is also "not advised".

The Auckland beaches marked with a red droplet include: Point Chevalier, Blockhouse Bay and Te Atau Beach.

According to the Safeswim website, beaches in the east Auckland suburb of Howick are safe to swim in.

Big Bucklands, Little Bucklands, Eastern, Mellons Bay, Howick and Cockle Bay have all been marked with a green water droplet meaning the beaches there have "good water quality" and are safe to swim at.
