Multiple Kiwis report salmonellosis symptoms after eating recalled hummus

An Auckland woman who ate about a quarter of a large tub of Lisa's recalled original hummus says she woke up the following day with a sore stomach and spent her morning vomiting.

Life Health Foods NZ Ltd announced a recall of a multitude of products that contain tahini due to the possibility of salmonella contamination on Wednesday.

An Auckland woman who Newshub has agreed not to name said she was enjoying her hummus on Thursday night with no immediate issues after she ate it. But in the early hours of Friday morning, she woke to a painful stomachache and felt as though she was about to vomit.

"And then it was first toilet trip and then I was like 'uh oh I'm going to vomit' and I vomited through my legs," she told Newshub while laughing.

The Auckland resident said she can't be 100 percent sure that her sudden sickness was caused by the recalled product, but said she and her family were trying to piece the puzzle together of how she fell sick and her father admitted he "saw this thing yesterday about the hummus".

"And he went and checked out hummus. And it was one of the ones that had been recalled."

Though the woman is in high spirits, she told Newshub she hasn't been able to eat much apart from plain crackers, a lemonade iceblock and a bottle of Powerade.

"I will be keeping the bowl close to me."

The woman admitted to Newshub "I love Lisa's hummus" and made it clear that she isn't dissing the popular brand.

"I'll be going back to the hummus," she said, adding only when it's safe to do so.

And the Auckland woman isn't the only one struck down with salmonellosis. Others have shared their symptoms on Twitter.

One person tweeted "boycott these f***ers", adding "two of us down with salmonella".

Another woman urged Kiwis to throw out their recalled hummus after four days of vomiting.

"I don't recommend salmonella."

New Zealand Food Safety deputy director-general Vincent Arbuckle said in a statement NZFS hadn't been notified of any confirmed hummus-induced cases of salmonellosis by Te Whatu Ora.

"People with salmonella symptoms, such as abdominal cramps, diarrhoea, fever and vomiting, should drink lots of fluids and get plenty of rest."

Arbuckle said anyone who is unwell with severe salmonella symptoms should talk to their health professional, or call Healthline on 0800 611 116.

Severe symptoms can include dehydration, severe diarrhoea, or feeling sick for more than seven days.
