Six months after the murder of Bay of Plenty woman Korrey Whyman, Police say they're still committed to holding those responsible for her death to account.

The 28-year-old woman from Kawerau was shot inside her car as she was heading towards Mourea on State Highway 33, in the early hours of the morning on September 25.

Detective Inspector Lindsay Pilbrow said in a statement that investigators have been working on 'Operation Dorado' for the past six months.

"This week, strong lines of enquiry led a specialist police search team to a location near Lake Rotoiti, looking for specific items related to the homicide," he said.

Despite one man already being charged with her murder, Det Inspt Pilbrow said police believe there were others involved who may have "protected these individuals and their involvement".

"We know these people are still in the area, and that we will have spoken to some of them during the investigation."

Officers searched along State Highway 30, and a bush area next to "properties of interest".

Whyman was rushed to hospital after the shooting, but she died from her injuries.

"She was a loving mother to three young children, and her life was taken needlessly," said Det Inspt Pilbrow.

Two weeks later police found a burnt-out dark-blue Toyota Hilux ute in a "secluded" Kawerau reserve, which they believe had been set alight two days after the shooting.

Det Inspt Pilbrow said despite receiving plenty of information from the public, they'll continue investigating.

"Six months is a long time to hang on to secrets and the guilt. You might have information about the shooting, the motor vehicle used, or you might have overheard conversations that were suspicious."
