Recalled hummus products accidentally sold to 14 customers in Canterbury

Hummus products that were recalled over salmonella contamination fears have been accidentally sold in Canterbury supermarkets.

A multitude of products that contain tahini imported from Turkey were recalled on Wednesday and Thursday.

But due to an error, on Friday, Foodstuffs South Island's Hornby Distribution Centre received a delivery from a supplier of recalled hummus products. Some of the impacted items were then sent on to stores in error on Saturday and later sold to 14 customers.

Foodstuffs South Island said of the 14 customers they know purchased recalled products, 12 have been contacted but they've been unable to reach two.

They urge any of the two remaining customers who purchased the following products at the listed supermarkets to not consume it and instead return it to the store:

  • Lisa's Hummus Beetroot & Roast Cashew 200g sold at New World Durham Street in Christchurch on Saturday, March 4
  • Lisa's Original Hummus with Garlic & Lemon 380g sold at New World Halswell in Christchurch on Saturday, March 4.

The impacted customers can return their products to the supermarket for a full refund.

"We apologise for any concern this has raised," Foodstuffs South Island said.

"A full investigation as to why the recalled product was delivered to Foodstuffs South Island and despatched to the stores is underway."

They added as soon as they became aware of the error on Saturday, all Foodstuffs South Island stores that received the recalled product were contacted and all impacted items were removed from shelves and destroyed. All shops already had signage in place where the product was displayed advising there was a recall for these items.
