A witness of a fatal assault in Auckland says there was "blood everywhere" as they tried to comfort the victim who died in front of them.

Emergency services were called after a crash at the intersection of Tramway and Beachhaven Rds on Friday night.

Police said it's believed the driver of one car involved in the crash died after they were assaulted by an occupant of the other car.

The driver suffered critical injuries and died at the scene.

A witness who returned to the scene on Saturday morning to lay flowers by the road told the NZ Herald he saw two young men attacking a third man.

The witness said rushed to the man's side and helped other onlookers apply pressure to his wounds.

"I find comfort in hoping that he found comfort that there were people there talking to him... when he passed," he told the Herald. "I never met the guy, but to be with someone in their last moments like that, that's quite a connection."

The alleged offenders fled the scene and officers are still searching for their whereabouts. The car they were in is described as a black BMW sedan, registration CTC411.

Anyone who sees this car is asked to call the police immediately on 111, quoting event number P053841960.
