The cordons blocking access to Piha since the devastating floods are set to be lifted this Friday, Auckland Council has confirmed.

Piha Road's cordon will be removed at midday, opening the popular location to non-residents again after more than three months.

The main route to Piha suffered serious damage from recent severe weather events, scarred by landslips and destroyed asphalt.

The Council's deputy group recovery manager, Mace Ward, said the cordon did its job well.

"The Piha cordon was put in place immediately following Cyclone Gabrielle to minimise the risk to public safety, maintain the integrity of Piha Road and reduce community distress while the immediate aftermath of the extreme weather was assessed."

Auckland Council and Auckland Transport have been assessing land and road stability, and they're now confident there's low risk to the public.

"We know that many Aucklanders have been frustrated at being excluded from Piha and we are very pleased to be removing the cordon so Piha can once again welcome visitors, friends and whānau," Ward said.

Auckland Transport's chief engineer, Murray Burt, said geotechnical assessments show the road can now cope with higher traffic volumes.

"I want to assure the community that we are doing everything possible to get things back to normal as soon as possible," he said.

Temporary traffic lights will remain for the one-lane section of road near Piha's main lookout, and along Scenic Drive near Elevation Brasserie.

Burt warned that "journey times will be longer than what people were used to before Cyclone Gabrielle."

Plans are underway for permanent repairs, and the Piha community will be notified once assessments and designs are complete.

Several homes were damaged, and many roads in and around Piha remain closed - including Rayner Road and Marine Parade.

Walking tracks weren't untouched either, with the Kitekite Falls track, Tasman Lookout, Lion Rock, and others still closed for repairs.

Cordons remain at Muriwai and Karekare, with access limited to residents and emergency services only.
