The family of a person who was hospitalised with minor to moderate injuries after a robbery at an Auckland liquor store says they are "in shock" and are calling on police to do more.

Emergency services were called to Liquor Baron on Ferguson Road, Ōtara at about 6:20pm on Friday following reports of a firearm being discharged.

A police spokesperson told Newshub staff had arrived to discover there had been a robbery at the liquor store.

One person had minor to moderate injuries, which police said were not firearms related.

The family told Newshub that New Zealand's laws "are too soft on criminals and ignore the victims".

"Lawlessness breeds lawlessness," they said.

"If once you commit a crime and are not brought to justice, the person gets emboldened and commits another crime."

The family wants to see the police presence doubled.

Adding to the family's woes, they said they had to wait at the emergency department for over six hours, prompting them to call the hospital system a "shambles".
