Classic Kiwiana: Harold the Giraffe's mobile classroom on the market

A piece of Kiwiana is on the market - one of Harold the Giraffe's mobile classrooms.

The face of the Life Education Trust has just moved into some new digs on the West Coast and now his old home is up for sale.

So Harold came out from behind the curtain to give a rare interview.

Harold's home has been a home to almost every Kiwi kid for decades. A place to learn, connect and sit under the stars. Now his place is on the market.

Harold moved into a new home earlier this year. So the West Coast Life Education Trust is selling his old one.

"Over the years because it sits on coastal areas it's developed quite a bit of rust so that's been an ongoing issue with its COF," said Trust executive officer Suzi Taylor.

It's not currently road-worthy so its future will likely have to be in a permanent location.

"It could be used for a whole heap of things, the possibilities are endless," Taylor said.

Before it can be sold the iconic branding on the outside has to be taken off.

Harold himself is helping with the cleanup. His new home, with a touch of nostalgia, will continue to educate the kids of the coast.

"Some things are the same, the lights and stars and of course Harold, but we've had a lot of technological advances so we've got a lot more cool things like body scans and cool videos," said educator Kelly Simpson.

More than 18,000 kids up and down the coast have called into Harold's. It's hoped the sale will help thousands more through.

"Everything raised from the sale of this trailer will go towards our trust which gets put back directly to into the kids," Taylor said.

But there are terms and conditions!

"People wanting to know all the time if Harold was included - which he's not," Taylor said.

Trade Me bids for a slice of Kiwi history close on Monday.
