A man has been arrested after shooting at a car and threatening to kill people in Masterton on Sunday.

Detective Senior Sergeant Philip Skoglund said police received multiple driving complaints on Sunday afternoon about two vehicles.

A 22-year-old was arrested after he allegedly shot at a vehicle and the occupants inside the car on Ballance Street.

The people involved were known to each other, Skoglund said.

The 22-year-old was charged with committing a dangerous act with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, reckless discharge of a firearm, threatening to kill and driving while suspended.

Skoglund said it was fortunate no one was seriously hurt or killed during the shooting.

"We understand that other residents were going about their day when this incident occurred, and it must have been concerning," Skoglund said.

Skoglund urged anyone with information or who witnessed the shooting to contact police.

"Police by calling 105 or filing a report online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105 referencing file number 230730/6746."

The man will appear in Masterton District Court on Wednesday.
