Police are urging any witnesses to a young person being hit and killed by a train to come forward.
Emergency services responded to the incident on Hewletts Road in Mount Maunganui at around 2:55pm on Monday.
Police are now urging anyone who saw what happened to come forward and speak to them.
"If you witnessed the incident, or saw a young person riding a bicycle in the area immediately prior to the incident at 2.50pm, please call 105 or make a report online at https://www.police.govt.nz/use-105. Please reference file number 230731/0283," a police spokesperson said.
Police said the young person was hit and killed by the train at a level crossing.
The death will be referred to the Coroner, police said.
