A University of Canterbury student who was arrested last week had two batons and a knife at his halls of residence, a court has heard.

The 20-year-old man, who has been granted name suppression, appeared in Christchurch District Court on Wednesday facing three charges including possession of an offensive weapon.

It comes after police were called to Tupuānuku Hall in Christchurch during the early hours of the morning on October 19 after a person made comments suggesting they intended to self-harm. A man was subsequently arrested.

The 20-year-old has been remanded on bail until his next appearance on November 15.
