Police are investigating after a person died in Gisborne Police Station overnight.

A police spokesperson confirmed the person was found dead in a cell by police staff on Thursday morning.

Police are making enquiries on behalf of the Coroner.

"The cause of death will be a matter for the Coroner to determine, and the IPCA have been notified," the spokesperson said.

Police wouldn't reveal the identity but Newshub understands the person who died in custody was 63-year-old Lynne Martin.

Martin was found guilty on Wednesday of murdering her elderly father - Ronald Russell Allison, 88, by setting his house alight in the early hours of January 25, 2013.

The house was located near Te Karaka, about 30km from Gisborne.

Allison's son, John, said the guilty verdict had provided "closure", adding he'd been asked about the case constantly.

"Since my father's death, I've had to carry the load of answering questions," John told Newshub.

He felt emotionless after hearing his sister had died in police custody, he said.

"I'm in a position of no sorrow over this."

Martin was being held at Gisborne police station after her guilty verdict, before she was meant to be transferred to prison.
