Police have named the Auckland man found dead in the water on Waiheke Island earlier this month.

It comes after a member of the public found the body on the morning of November 15, near the suburb of Ostend.

Lee Douglas Perry, 48, travelled to the island from south Auckland earlier last week for work.

His death is being treated as "unexplained" and police are continuing to make enquiries.

"Police are wanting to establish the circumstances of the death and the discovery of a burnt-out vehicle," said Detective Senior Sergeant Chris Allan, from Auckland City CIB.

The vehicle was spotted on Wharf Rd on Tuesday and was later found crashed and burnt out 14km away on Man O War Rd the following morning. Police have confirmed it belonged to Perry.
