New Zealand's most Googled terms of 2023 revealed - most popular politicians, movies, and sports teams

Google has revealed the most-searched-for topics in New Zealand in 2023, capturing the zeitgeist of the year and all its highs and lows.

There were good times, with the Football Ferns opening the FIFA Women's World Cup in style with a win against Norway.

The One New Zealand Warriors also captured the nation's imagination, with 'Up The Wahs' making its mark on the list.

There were also tough times, with Cyclone Gabrielle devastating the East Coast and Northland and the Auckland Floods wreaking havoc.

There were surprising times such as Jacinda Ardern's resignation announcement, and controversial times, such as Posie Parker's visit to Auckland.

Carrie Jones from Google New Zealand told Newshub "we look at trending queries that have had the highest spike in traffic over a sustained period, when comparing this year to last".

"That gives us a unique picture of 2023."

Cyclone Gabrielle was the top news search for New Zealand, followed by the death of Friends star Matthew Perry, with the election results coming in third.

While that victory belonged to National, ACT and New Zealand First, the most searched politicians were all from Labour.

Jacinda Ardern topped the list with her shock resignation, followed by her successor Chris Hipkins, and Kiri Allan who stepped down as Justice Minister after being charged with careless driving.

Christopher Luxon, Winston Peters and David Seymour took out fourth, fifth, and sixth place respectively.

When it came to which film Kiwis searched the most, it came down to the two juggernauts of 2023 - Barbie versus Oppenheimer.

According to Google, the Christopher Nolan epic about the creator of the atomic bomb came out on top.

The Rugby World Cup was the most-searched-for sporting event, followed by the FIFA Women's World Cup, but the Warriors were the most-searched team.

"Themes like sports - which Kiwis love - came out on lots of countries' lists," said Jones.

With such a wild and varied year, who knows what might be in store for 2024.
