A body has been found on the Far North's 90 Mile Beach.

Police have yet to identify the person, and say it's too soon to say if it was adiver reported missing at Ahipara - on the southern end of the beach - in December.

A seven-day rahui has been placed on the area by local iwi.

Police had since December 23 been searching the area for a local diver who went missing at Tauroa Point.

The initial search effort by sea and air was hampered by bad weather.

The rāhui is a temporary, customary ban on surfing, swimming, fishing and shellfish gathering, put in place by elders of Te Rarawa Kaiwhare and Ngā Tai o Te Uru.
