A 56-year-old man has been arrested after a major investigation in Christchurch.

Multiple young women living in the upper Riccarton and Ilam area had laid complaints about a man filming through their windows.

The man was arrested on Tuesday, after what police say has been "months of enquiries".

The accused first caught investigators' attention on March 3 during a conversation with police about an unrelated matter.

Detective Senior Sergeant Tania Jellyman said "a description of the man's behaviour caught the attention of an investigator".

"It matched the behaviour described in a news article from the previous month where young woman recounted seeing a man filming through their windows."

Detectives then established 'Operation Click' and made enquiries that led to the suspect being charged.

"Detectives have so far laid 16 charges, including five of making intimate visual recordings and seven of burglary," Det Snr Sgt Jellyman said.

The man is due to appear in the Christchurch District Court on May 13, and police say more charges are expected as other victims are identified.

"These events have been disturbing for the victims, who are in no way at fault for what occurred," Det Snr Sgt Jellyman said.

"The young women involved have shown incredible bravery, which has allowed Police to lay these charges."

Those at home who notice suspicious behaviour are urged to call police immediately on 111 or 105.
