Pets of people sleeping rough in Christchurch will be treated to a special spa-day experience in the city this weekend, with Animal Physio NZ's annual project Street Tails returning for a fourth year.

Rough sleepers in the city are encouraged to bring their pets along to the Christchurch City Mission on Sunday, 11am to 1pm.

Free services, including a pop-up veterinary care clinic, physiotherapy treatments and grooming treatments will be on offer, as well as free food, toys, clothing and bedding.

Animal Physio NZ said, for many of the rough sleepers in Christchurch, their pets play a big part in their lives.

"The pets are family and offer unconditional love, friendship, support and security. But owning a pet is costly and that is why we are reaching out to help," a statement said.

"The pets get full nose-to-tail health checks, annual vaccinations, physiotherapy, flea treatment and worming treatment.

"The pet's will be pampered with massage, grooming, nail clips and of course lots of cuddles and love and will receive many gifts such as warm jackets, blankets, beds, food, treats, toys and a vet book."

Any pets that need further medical care will be referred to partnering vet clinics.

Meanwhile, as they're being pampered, their owners will receive support, hot drinks and baked goods.

A Givealittle page has been set up to help Animal Physio NZ run the programme.
