Man critically injured after attacked by youths, possibly hit with scooter in Hawke's Bay

One person is a critical condition following a serious assault in Hawke's Bay on Wednesday night. 

The man is currently in hospital after being attacked and potentially hit with a scooter. 

Police received multiple calls around 11:35pm Wednesday, reporting an altercation between a man and a group of young people in Waipukurau. 

The assault took place in the middle of the intersection of Russell and Herbert streets 

"The man was assaulted, and possibly hit with a scooter, before the youths left the area," Detective Senior Sergeant Sally Patrick said. 

"Ambulance staff treated the man on scene, and he was taken to Hawke's Bay Hospital with head injuries, where he remains." 

Police have located two youths and are speaking with them to assist with their investigation.  

"Investigators have been in Waipukurau today, viewing CCTV, and speaking to witnesses," Snr Sgt Patrick said. 

"Police will also be looking to speak with the victim when he is well enough." 

Waipukurau is the largest town in the Central Hawke's Bay District and is 7 kilometres south of Waipawa, and 50 kilometres southwest of Hastings.
