New video emerges of incident where policeman allegedly beaten, 'held hostage' in car

New video has emerged of a serious incident in Hamilton where a policeman was allegedly beaten and taken hostage in a vehicle.

Police earlier told Newshub the officer was taken for a ride in the passenger side for about 1.5 kilometres.

The officer sustained moderate injuries to his face during the altercation, including his teeth, but has since been released from Waikato Hospital.

A court heard how the policeman, who was said to have been pinned between a power box and the vehicle, jumped into the partially opened passenger door to avoid injury.

New video obtained by Newshub appears to show the dramatic encounter as onlookers watched in shock.

Eighteen-year-old Rotorua man Boycie Hapeta is facing five charges including intent to injure, dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without a license and excess breath alcohol.

Hapeta appeared in the Hamilton District Court on Monday. He will reappear in court May 6.

Police told Newshub on Sunday the officer was "in good spirits". Police had nothing further to add.
