Man dies in suspicious Tikipunga, Northland house fire

A man has died after car and house fire in Tikipunga, north of Whangārei, which police have deemed suspicious.

Firefighters were called to Thomas St around 2:40am on Monday.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson told Newshub a car and house were well-involved in fire when four fire trucks arrived.

"Upon arrival, the fire was extinguished by Fire and Emergency NZ and a man was located inside the property," Detective Inspector Al Symonds said.

"Despite efforts from first responders, the man had received critical injuries and sadly died at the scene.

"At this stage, we are unable to release further details about the deceased but will look to do so in due course."

Police are now investigating the fire, which they consider suspicious.

"Our investigation is now in the early stages to determine the full circumstances of what has occurred," Det Insp Symonds said.

"Police have been at the address overnight speaking to a number of witnesses who were in the area at the time of the incident.

"A scene guard has been in place this morning while a scene examination was commenced, and this will remain in place today as our enquiries continue."

Det Insp Symonds said the community should expect a police presence in the area on Monday.

Anyone who was in the area or has information about the fire is asked to contact police on 105 or online, referencing file number 240429/4766. Information can also be provided anonymously via Crime Stoppers on 0800 555 111.

A post-mortem examination and formal identification of the victim will be carried out over the coming days.

The blaze has since been contained and crews are working on putting out hotspots.
