Police release images of man they believe is responsible for fatal shooting on Auckland's Ponsonby Rd

Police have released images of the man they are seeking after a man was shot dead on Auckland's Ponsonby Rd on Sunday night.

He is being described as "extremely dangerous" and the public is being told not to approach him.

Detective Inspector Chris Barry, Auckland City CIB, said the suspect tried to enter a bar on Ponsonby Rd but was denied entry as it was about to close.

He then moved south down Ponsonby Rd and remained in the area before the shooting, which took place a few minutes after being denied entry to the bar.

"At around 10:15pm a group of four people, including the victim, exited a parked car on Ponsonby Rd and walked in the man's direction," Det Insp Barry said.

Multiple shots were then fired at the victim.

"The man is described as being of large build with dark hair, facial hair, and quite a large tattoo on his left forearm."

Photos released by police show the man wearing a light blue jersey with white stripes.

Det Insp Barry said police don't know what the motivation is for the shooting and it was "difficult to say" if it was gang-related.

"The victim and his associates have arrived on Ponsonby Rd. They have exited a vehicle and from there, at this stage, we don't have a motivation."

Det Insp Barry acknowledged the "concern the community will be feeling in relation to this incident" after what they describe as an "extremely concerning" incident.

"We know that there is unease in the community, particularly as police have not yet made an arrest."

"However, we would like to reassure Ponsonby residents, and the wider community, that a dedicated police team are working diligently to hold the person involved to account."

He said police are aware of speculation surrounding the incident, adding that it "will not assist our investigation".

"You can be certain we will piece together why this shocking incident occurred.

"We would also like to remind anyone who may be assisting in concealing the man's whereabouts could also find themselves being prosecuted."

A scene guard remains in place on Ponsonby Road and the street is closed between Richmond Rd and Anglesea St.
