Nicknamed 'Big Bear', Liti spent much of his youth in Tonga and transitioned from rugby to weightlifting in his teens.

After winning gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, with a Games record of 403kg combined, he was also awarded the David Dixon Award for sportsmanship, when he supported injured rival Lauititi Lui during the medal presentation.

Later that year, he finished 13th at the world championships, improving his personal best total to 414kg.
