The All Blacks Sevens have fought back to beat Australia 14-12 in their final pool match at Tokyo Stadium on Tuesday.
The Kiwis were forced to battle back from a 12-0 halftime deficit against their trans-Tasman rivals, ultimately prevailing in a hard-fought encounter to claim top spot in Pool A.
Their quarter-final will be against Canada, scheduled for 8:30pm on Tuesday (NZ time).
The opening half was all the Australians, as they expertly controlled possession and field position, cashing in with tries to Samu Kerevi and Josh Coward to take a 12-0 lead into the interval.
The Kiwi responded with a strong start to the second half, Dylan Collier running in their first try of the game, which was expertly converted from the sideline.
But Collier quickly went from hero to villain, shown a yellow card for taking out a player in the air, reducing the Kiwis to six players.
Despite being a man down, the Kiwis struck again through Andrew Knewstubb, who scythed through the defensive line to put New Zealand up 14-12, their first lead of the game.
With less than two minutes, an error gave the Aussie one final chance to steal a win, only for a knock-on to seal victory for New Zealand.
