More than 100 jobs at a Northland sawmill are on the chopping block.
It's the latest signal the industry is in strife and timber processing bosses are calling on the government to fulfil their election promises to help.
The Northland sawmill is looking like a ghost town after 111 people found out on Thursday their jobs may be axed.
Carter Holt Harvey is looking at shutting down its Whangarei mill; a blow to the regional economy.
In a statement Carter Holt Harvey said, "The decision has been made reluctantly but the sawmill had been facing log shortages for some time and our analysis was that it's only going to get worse".
Industry leaders are crying out to the government to step in to even the playing field with foreign companies.
More than fifty timber processing executives penned a letter to the Prime Minister urging her to fulfil a promise made in the 2017 election.
"It's an area that we've got to give more urgency to," Regional Economic Development Minister Shane Jones said.
