Newshub Nation: Fresh National Party MPs share excitement and first-day jitters

While the final results for New Zealand's 2023 election will have to wait for special votes to be counted, National has managed to bring over 20 new MPs into Parliament.

A flood of blue MPs arrived at Parliament this week and Newshub Nation's senior reporter Laura Walters caught up with some of them to find out how they were settling in.

MP-elect for the Rangitīkei electorate Suze Redmayne said "it's really exciting to be here and I'm really enjoying it, but there's a whole lot to learn".

"I sort of semi got lost on my first day trying to find the carpark," Redmayne admitted.

"Subsequently, I've had a little trouble wandering around the basement trying to work out how to get back up again."

Asked about her style of politicking, Redmayne said she's "relaxed, approachable. I think the technical term for it's a retail politician".

Another fresh face is Blair Cameron, the MP-elect for Nelson.

The Nelson race is tight, with Labour's Rachel Elizabeth Boyack only 54 votes behind, however, Cameron is 35th on National's list so his entry into Government is all but certain.

"It's an absolute privilege to be here," he said, "and there is the weight of that".

Cameron said that once he's had a chance to get settled into his office, he will decorate with "some really special things for my home, for my family, for my friends as well".

He explained that when he got a scholarship to study overseas his friends all got him a New Zealand flag they had signed.

"That's something I take with me," he said.

Carlos Cheung is the MP-elect for Mt Roskill, a safe red seat he decisively won from Labour's Michael Wood.

"This is a very special moment," he said when he arrived at Parliament.

Asked whether he had taken time to take it all in, Cheung said "I think I just walked straight in. I don't thing too much".

Cheung said that he's been talking to his wife and daughter "basically every single day" since arriving in Wellington.

Cheung's daughter is four-and-a-half and said his first night away was "a little bit tough on her, but she is getting used to it".

He's been asking senior MPs how to achieve a good work-life balance and said the best piece of advice he's received thus far is "serve with your heart".

Meager had already spent time in Parliament, spending time under Chris Bishop and as press secretary for Paula Bennett, but said "there's actually a lot to learn".

"It can be quite overwhelming, but it's brilliant to be back."

He's already visited his former colleagues in the press gallery but admits it's a little scary being in front of the camera.

"I don't think anyone should ever probably get used to it."

Meager said that honesty is a fundamental part of his job "because it goes to building trust and confidence".

"For someone like me who wants to be a very good electorate MP, I have to have the faith of my constituents, whether they vote for me or not."

Angee Nicholas is the MP-elect for Te Atatū but it's another tight race and she is currently only beating Labour's Phil Twyford by 30 votes.

"The experience itself is extraordinary and not many people can say that they've been through this process, so I'm really just trying to soak it in."

On the campaign trail, Nicholas said she's learned "that remaining connected to the people and the people who put you here is probably really important".

Nicholas hopes she will remain the same during her time as a politician.

"Moving into this space, it's really important to maintain who you are."

For her, the priority during her time as an MP is staying connected.

Nimon has family history in the halls of Parliament, and has already spotted a couple of her great-grandfathers on the walls.

"They were members of the Legislative Council before," she said.

She intends to take a trip to the library to find out more about their time serving.

Nimon admitted that the history does weigh on her a little.

"Decisions made for communities have been happening here for a really long time, and so, you know, I take that quite really seriously," she said.

"And I think it's just quite exciting. More than any other serious responsibility, it's exciting."
