Disney's first South Pacific Princess

Disney's first South Pacific Princess

She's feisty, her name is Moana and she's Disney's new and first South Pacific Princess.

The script is written by New Zealand's Taika Waititi, and one year from now Disney Animation will be on the eve of introducing its next big Disney Princess, who's got voyaging on her mind.

But she's not alone. She'll have some help from her mate, Maui.

Fourteen-year-old Auli'i Cravalho, who voices Moana, is a complete unknown and was plucked from obscurity from thousands of other hopeful Disney princesses.

For the producer, Osnat Shurer, and directors Ron Clements and John Musker, Auli'i was the one.

The two legends of Disney animation visited Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji and Rotoura on their fact-finding Moana mission/vacation and clearly want to do right by us.

Story went to discover the project, which has been four years in the making, and the creators mining our Pacific legends for some movie musical magic.
