Super Rugby 2019: Perseverance pays off for Blues coach Leon MacDonald

For once the Blues have been able to turn opportunities into points, snapping their long losing streak against the Chiefs in Auckland.

The Blues beat the Chiefs 23-8, snapping a 15 game losing streak dating back to 2011 against their Bombay rivals and pleasing coach Leon MacDonald.

The four tries-to-one bonus-point win puts the Blues within reach of the top eight, while it's likely now become a game too far for the Chiefs to make the playoffs.

MacDonald praised his Blues' perseverance as they ended a four-game Super Rugby losing streak while claiming their fifth win of the season.

"Everyone was starting to get a bit anxious, including us in the box, because we were making the same mistakes as we have done. We've put a lot of work into that area of the game. It just wasn't quite happening for us, but we persevered.

"In this competition, it's how you respond to the setbacks. Last week we didn't respond well; this time around we scampered back and defended our line and got away without giving away a try and all of a sudden it was our turn again.

"Even though we weren't perfect, the effort in terms of the scramble defence and recovery was fantastic.

"If you want to be a serious contender in this competition you're going to have to work really hard for 80 minutes every week.

"That's been our mindset, we've trained really hard, and every week you feel it's not far away. So to see a performance like that feels good because you know it's in this team."

While MacDonald was celebrating, Chiefs coach Colin Cooper as left fuming after his side didn't "get the rub of the green".

Cooper felt Ofa Tuungafasi's 59th-minute try shouldn't have been awarded, saying the Blues prop "clearly knocked on", while he couldn't understand why Pita Gus Sowakula's wasn't given, which could have made it a three-point contest in the final 10 minutes.

"At 10-8 we were in the fight," Cooper said. "Tries went their way which maybe should have been looked at and weren't looked at.

"We were awarded a try and unless the TMO got another view, I couldn't understand why Pita Gus' wasn't a try. We didn't get the rub of the green."

Despite the setbacks, the Chiefs will be happy All Blacks flanker Same Cane got through his first rugby match in since breaking his neck seven months ago.

Cane was a temporary blood replacement in the first half and then played the final 26 minutes.

The Chiefs host the Reds next Friday, while the Blues are away to the Crusaders in Christchurch.
