Cricket World Cup: English actor John Cleese says title should be shared

English actor John Cleese has weighed in on the Cricket World Cup final debate; should his home country have won or should they share the trophy with New Zealand?

After a tied game, England were crowned world champions by virtue of having scored more boundary fours and sixes - 26 to New Zealand's 17 - in the entire match.

"There's a part of me that feels it would be absolutely splendid if we agreed to share the world champion title with the Kiwis," Cleese said in a Twitter post.

Cleese, a comedian who lives in the US, is best known for his legendary role in Monty Python's Flying Circus.

His Tweet went on to say it was a "magnificent" display from both teams and that both deserved to win.

Kiwis and Brits alike praised Cleese's graciousness. One Twitter user said it was a "fine sentiment from a fine man".

Another Kiwi thanked him for his kind words, although couldn't help "feeling just a little bit gutted for our boys".

In later Tweets, Cleese said: "Great acts of sportsmanship remind us that what unites us is stronger than what divides us.

"I am so proud of our guys because they are not just great cricketers, they are thoroughly admirable human beings too, every one of them," he wrote.
