Blackcaps v England: New Zealand rue another 'super over' defeat in T20 decider

The Blackcaps are ruing another 'super over' loss to England, this time in their T20 series in Auckland.

In a repeat of July's World Cup final - which left New Zealand heartbroken - the English took the honours again, in the T20 decider in a rain-affected match at Eden Park in Auckland.

New Zealand plundered 146/5 from 11 overs, and it took Chris Jordan hitting 12 off the final three deliveries to take the game to a 'super over'.

Jonny Bairstow and captain Eoin Morgan scored 17 off England's six deliveries, before Jordan limited New Zealand to eight to seal a 3-2 series win.

Even though Blackcaps skipper Tim Southee was disappointed with the outcome, he tried to take the result on the chin.

"Hopefully it will be third time lucky if there's another one," he said with a grin on his face.

"I guess it's a bit of a bizarre day - we were probably 15-20 minutes away from no cricket, and then we had plenty of entertainment and another 'super over'.

"It would have been nice to have been on the right side of it, but England were too good in the end.

"We obviously wanted to win the series, and in the end we just weren't quite good enough."

Southee defended the decision to send Tim Seifert in to bat for the 'super over' alongside Martin Guptill. Seifert played some incredible shots during the Blackcaps' innings, but couldn't replicate them when needed most.

"We just felt with [Chris] Jordan being able to execute his yorkers and Tim Seifert being able to play the scoop and the shots over the keeper, that he may have been a better option with Jordan being such a good yorker bowler."

Southee bowled the 'super over' for New Zealand.

"I guess there was three options. Myself, Trent and Mitch Santner, but we just decided to go with me and it was probably a few too many for the guys to chase down," Southee added.

England captain Morgan also heaped praise on New Zealand following another remarkable showdown between the two teams.

"I said this after the World Cup final, they are actually a great team to aspire to be like - the way they carry themselves and perform," he said.

"The Blackcaps fans have been so receptive and hospitable while we've been here, it's been such a pleasure to come here and play."

The two teams now begin preparation for a two-test series, which gets underway on November 21 at Bay Oval in Mt Maunganui. Bay Oval will become New Zealand's ninth test cricket venue.

The Blackcaps will likely name their test team later this week.

England's test team is already in New Zealand, and they'll travel to Whangarei on Monday ahead of a three-day warm-up match against New Zealand A, starting on Friday. Tom Blundell will captain the team, which features nine Blackcaps.
