New Zealand Cricket (NZC) is examining CCTV footage to identify a man who allegedly racially abused English fast bowler Jofra Archer.

The Blackcaps crushed England by an innings and 65 runs on Monday afternoon in Mt Maunganui, with Neil Wagner delivering a series of decisive blows for the home side.

But while Archer - who was born in Barbados - tweeted that the crowd at Bay Oval had been "amazing", one individual stood out.

"A bit disturbing hearing racial insults today whilst battling to help save my team, the crowd was been amazing this week except for that one guy, @TheBarmyArmy was good as usual also."

He later told ESPN that the man had been a Kiwi spectator making comments "about the colour of [his] skin".

"I don't think it would happen in England."

On Monday night, NZC released a statement saying it would contact and apologise to the English player, whom the organisation said was "racially abused by a spectator as he left the field at the conclusion of the first test at Bay Oval, Mt Maunganui".

"Although security providers at the venue were unable to locate the perpetrator, NZC will be examining CCTV footage and making further inquiries tomorrow in an endeavour to identify the man responsible."

NZC has zero tolerance towards abusive or offensive language at any of its venues, and will refer any developments in the case to police.

"It will contact Mr Archer tomorrow to apologise for the unacceptable experience and to promise increased vigilance in the matter when the teams next meet in Hamilton."

Many of the replies to Archer's tweet expressed sympathy for the player.

"Terrible, so sorry to hear that. Keep your head up and know that you're appreciated worldwide," said one tweeter.

"Apologies mate, I'm a Kiwi and that's not a normal thing here."
