Super Rugby 2020: No set anti-vax policy for revamped competition

Super Rugby Aoeteroa will sidestep any controversy over anti-vaxxing, when it relaunches on June 13.

The NRL, which returns to action on May 28, is grappling with players who have refused compulsory flu vaccination before they are cleared to play.

Gold Coast Titans duo Bryce Cartwrigtht and Brian Kelly have been stood down indefinitely over their refusal to get influenza vaccinations.

Other known players who are against the mandatory vaccinations include Canberra Raiders trio Josh Papalii, Joseph Tapine and Sia Soliola, Canterbury Bulldogs hooker Sione Katoa, and Manly Sea Eagles players Addin Fonua-Blake, Martin Taupau and Dylan Walker.

But NZ Rugby Players Association boss Rob Nichol says the revamped Super Rugby competition will take a different approach.

Nichol has told Newshub that players have different requirements around their religious beliefs, so that same policy will be followed in this instance.

"Certainly [flu vaccination] it's the right thing to do and it is recommended," says Nichol. "But if someone has a genuine reason or a staunch belief that they don't want to, then we will adapt for it."

NZ Rugby's acting medical advisor Dr Deb Robinson confirms the NRL predicament has been monitored, but she reiterates it will be up to the individuals.

"We have looked at it and we are also following codes all around the world, as they ready themselves to play, but in some cases, their situations are vastly different to New Zealand's, because their community transmission rates have been far more significant.

"As far as the flu vaccination is concerned, it's another measure that we can take to keep our players healthy during the winter.

"Our recommendation is that players and management get the flu vaccination, but it is a personal choice.

"It's important that our players and management get good information, and are well educated around the issue. We want them in a position to make an informed choice and, for us, getting as many players and management vaccinated as we can is ideal."

Super Rugby Aotearoa is set for kick-off, with a Saturday evening clash between the Highlanders and the Chiefs, before the Blues host the Hurricanes the following day.
