NRL 2020: Bankwest Stadium surface to be inspected after Roosters duo suffer suspected ACL injuries

The playing surface at Bankwest Stadium is under review by the NRL after the Sydney Roosters lost two players to suspected ACL injuries during their win over the St George Illawarra Dragons on Friday night.

Both Victor Radley and Sam Verrills were forced off the field in the first half, with the pair going down without any contact from any other players.

The recovery time for an ACL injury is usually 10 to 12 months, meaning both players will miss the remainder of the year and may miss the start of the 2021 season.

There is no suggestion the turn was responsible for the injuries  but with Bankwest due to host two more games this weekend, including the Parramatta Eels v Canberra Raiders on Saturday night, the NRL wants to be safe rather than sorry.

If the two games this weekend go ahead at the stadium, it would've hosted 11 games in 22 days.

The Project Apollo committee, who have overseen the NRL's swift return to action, did assess the Bankwest Stadium pitch prior to Friday's game.

"If we have any concerns around the safety of the pitch then we'll move the [Eels v Raiders] game," NRL interim chief executive Andrew Abdo told Channel Nine.

"The number of stadiums and where we would play was all around rationalising the venues to keep them safe and also making sure we didn't overplay at stadiums, that was a factor [for Project Apollo].

"You saw last week we made the move and we'll assess that again tomorrow morning."

Thursday's NRL clash between the Penrith Panthers and South Sydney Rabbitohs was moved from Campbelltown Stadium to Kogarah earlier in the week due to concerns over the pitch following a high injury rate at the stadium the previous week.

Roosters coach Trent Robinsin is refusing to blame the pitch for the injuries, while denying reports a member of his staff issued a formal complaint about the surface.

"We didn't mention it at all and I only found out after the game that someone said we made a formal complaint about it, which is complete nonsense. We didn't mention it," Robinson said.

"To be honest I don't care. I'm not an expert on that stuff, I just had two guys get an ACL.

"It's not up to me to make an assessment on the ground. Someone else will do that if they think they need to. Other than that I'll just get on with coaching the team."

A spokesperson for Bankwest Stadium said they will work with the NRL to ensure games can go ahead at the ground.
